Snowy

I'm with you, Michael. "Australia" is a darn good movie, and the two star reviewers can get stuffed.

My hairdresser told me today that it was a great movie - and hairdressers know everything so it must be!

That's what you pay them for, isn't it.

I don't understand the hostility towards the 2 star reviewers. Why is this flick more important than any other? More often than not I go to a movie without having seen any reviews although I sometimes catch David and Margaret on telly. A general rule of thumb is if Margaret doesn't like it and David does then I'm usually going to enjoy it myself.

In this case I won't be going because the bits I saw on Oprah were cringe worthy. I have no doubt that other parts are entertaining but I may as well wait till something comes up that I really want to see.

It does sound perfect for the US market though.
I don't recall anyone saying that the movie is any more important than any other. All I'm saying is that I disagree strongly with the two star reviewers, and agree with the four star reviewer, and for the reasons he stated. Judging by the crowd when I went, I think a lot of Aussies will enjoy it too.
The point I am making is a 2 star review rarely gets a blog entry whereas there has been some mumblings in the papers about the un-Australianess of criticizing the flick.

Patriotism seems a poor measure for rating a movie for those that take that line. If that becomes the measure you eventually end up with shockers like the Nicolas Cage 911 shocker.
I thought that entertainment value was the measure of a movie for most of us. Yes, it is true that I take more of an interest in a movie that is loosely based on a period of history in my country, and features Australian actors and director. Yes, it is true that my opinion may have been swayed by that. I only know what I like and what I dislike, and don't analyse the reasons. I leave that to the professional reviewers.

However, my post was about agreement with the review by an American who gave a four star review, and who made disparaging remarks about other US reviewers who gave the movie two stars. As such, I think patriotism can be discounted as a reason for his opinion.

In truth, only those who have seen the movie are really qualified to state an opinion on it. I have seen the movie, and stated my opinion. If others choose not to see it, then that is up to them. But they will never be able to offer an informed opinion on whether the movie rates two stars or four. Or to take those to task who disagree with the two star ratings.

I guess I seek more out of my trips to the movies. Entertainment value sometimes gets a guernsey but it's not the main reason for me. A movie like Downfall that depicts the last days of Adolf Hitler (German made too) was an outstanding flick but not a "feel good" by any measure. The same goes with a lot of American flicks that are anti war. They don't entertain but they have the ability to influence Americans for the better.

I'm always delighted when I catch a good flick and it happens to be Aussie made or has Aussie actors or Aussie technical involvement but I don't feel it's an exception. I expect Aussie stuff to hold it's own against all comers.

I hope you are not suggesting that seeing a "recommended" snippet disqualifies anyone being able to offer an opinion. That would mean I have to read the Bible cover to cover before being allowed to pick out any inconsistencies.
You are quite free to form an opinion on a movie for whatever reason you like, but when you take someone else to task for stating their opinion on a movie they've seen, but you haven't, then you are arguing from a less informed position. As such, there isn't any point in continuing this discussion.
I'm sorry you feel this way about it Snowy.

I guess when an article has a hostile header it invites a comment and I thought you were pretty relaxed about supporting your line of commentary.

Rather than taking you to task I was looking to see further depth in why you feel this way about the movie. I have heard several reviews both for and against but I was looking to see what "turned you on" about it.
